ACORN LIGHT PLANNING FOR
2007
Beth Meyerson
2007 Lighting
Grant Final Report (6623k PDF)
Last year ESPNA won a grant from the city worth $25,000 to install acorn
lighting throughout the neighborhood. We raised an additional $4,000 in
cash which allowed the purchase of eight acorn lights. We will again
apply to the city for a grant of $25,000 in June and we will raise $2,850 in
cash to purchase seven lights.

map that shows the placement of lights from the 2006 grant and the lights
selected for 2007 at the May ESPNA Neighborhood meeting.
WHY ACORN LIGHTING?
- The ESPNA neighborhood plan called for decorative lighting to preserve
and enhance the character and safety, history, ‘sense of space’,
demarcation, and identify of the ESPNA neighborhood.
- Past and current needs assessments: Street surveys in 2001 and April
2005, and neighborhood discussions April 2005 identified areas for
pedestrian lighting and improved street lighting
- Neighbors really liked the 2006 acorn lights and hope for more
throughout the neighborhood.
WHAT KIND OF ACORN LIGHTS?
- Nice looking, environmentally friendly, sufficient lighting
- Dark-sky compliant: with Lunar optics, glass shades (this will reduce
upward glare toward the sky)
- House-side shields if/as needed: 90, 120, or 180 degree shades (this
will prevent glare on houses)
- 13’ pole with holophane Granville fixture (type and height)
- 50 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) –the mellow yellow light (bright
enough, but not too bright)
- Asymmetrical glass, type VII, IESNA Cutoff
WHERE ARE WE PUTTING THESE THINGS ANYWAY?
See the map for
the placements approved at the May 2006 ESPNA neighborhood meeting.
DO WE HAVE TO PAY FOR THE ELECTRICITY THAT FEEDS
THESE ACORN LIGHTS?
No. Many neighbors asked why the city requires a meter for the points of
service if we are not being charged for the electricity feeding the acorn
lights. The requirement is by the power company, and the meter allows them
to track the electrical usage of these lights.
WE NEED YOU!
The lighting project success is due to neighborhood volunteering and
fundraising. The volunteer efforts for the 2007 grant are:
- Researching the history of your home
- Crime prevention (bike rides, neighborhood watch, anything to do with
crime prevention)
- Haunted Hike (a fundraiser for Acorn lights and CASA)
- Lighting committee
- Please send Beth Meyerson an email
(revbem8@earthlink.net) or call
727-825-0818 to sign up for these volunteer efforts.
- If you live within 200 feet of a proposed light, you have already
received a letter asking for your written approval for the planned light.
Please send your approvals to Beth Meyerson (in the stamped return envelope
by May 31st.
